Tips for Throwing a Safe Halloween Party for Children

Tips for Throwing a Safe Halloween Party for Children

Halloween Party Safety

Safety should be a primary concern when you’re throwing a Halloween party for any age group, but when it comes to children, making sure nobody gets hurt is absolutely imperative. Below are some tips to make sure of it.

  1. Eliminate Problematic Food

Halloween is a time for candy and treats, but if you’re having other children over, you’re going to need to make absolutely sure that you’re not serving food that contains ingredients that they’re allergic to. Peanut butter is a very common treat ingredient, but peanuts are also a common food allergy (probably even more common than you realize).

It’s a good idea to ask every child’s parents about food allergies prior to the party so that you can be well-prepared. Just to be safe, it doesn’t hurt to ask again when they drop their children off or show up with them.

  1. Check the Treats

If you happen to be having your party on trick-or-treat night, the children are going to be eager to dig into their candy. As the hostess or host of the party, you have the responsibility of making sure all treats have been inspected. Hopefully some other parents will be there to help you with this task, but you can’t let children eat what may have been tampered with.

Any treats received that haven’t been packaged should be disposed of, assuming that you don’t know the people who gave them away. This may lead to some groans from the kids, but it’s better than facing the consequences of not being careful. The truth is, most children would prefer to eat the packaged, brand-name candy anyway, so don’t feel too bad about breaking their hearts. Besides, you likely have some delicious homemade treats on hand to give them.

  1. Make Sure Your Home Has Been Made Accident-Proof

If you’re going to have a house full of children (and costumed children at that), you better take some time to eliminate potential accidents. Pick things up that can easily be tripped over, for example. Kids can be clumsy even when they’re not wearing masks and costumes. This goes for the yard too because let’s face it. There’s going to be some outside time.

If you have stairs, consider blocking them off and making them a “no go” zone. The last thing anybody needs is for a child to fall down the stairs.

If you have pets, find somewhere to take them that where they won’t be able to hurt anyone or get hurt themselves. Even a generally friendly pet can get angry when provoked by a kid who doesn’t know any better.

  1. Request Safe Costumes

When you’re inviting people to your party, it wouldn’t hurt to encourage costumes that won’t increase the likelihood of an accident. Masks can impair vision, for example, and some costumes have parts that can be tripped over. Keep in mind, you’re going to have a house full of rowdy, candied-up kids running around. It’s a good idea to take some precautions.

These are all simple tips that can ultimately make a world of difference when it comes to the safety of the children at your party. With minimal hassle, they can prevent a fun time from turning into a Halloween nightmare.
